Chapter 18

I checked into a seedy, serial killer looking motel. Thankfully, the room didn’t look as rundown as the outside. It was clean and not wreaking of cat urine, which was more than I could say for the last one I’d stayed in. I’d cleaned up enough at Kori’s to not get the cops called when someone spotted all that blood, but then I’d had to take off. Luckily, the wound on my arm had healed. It looked days old already.

I couldn’t go back to my house, and I couldn’t risk staying with Astrid and Kori. Her mother would know where to find me. Hell, Nyx would know where to find me. And the mysterious person who wanted me dead…

I flung myself onto the bed and stared up at the ceiling. My enemies seemed to be multiplying by the second. I felt cornered. The only person who might have my back was the vampire who held my brother captive and seemed to want the same for me.

I jumped when my phone rang and glanced at the screen. Maybe I’d spoken too soon. My ex, Nate, might be the answer to my problems. I wasn’t sure I wanted to owe him favors, but desperate times…

“Hey, Nate. Thanks for calling me back.” Took you long enough. I wasn’t sure where the thought came from. It was rude and unfair. He was my ex, he owed me nothing. Never mind that we still had a working relationship. But we were supposed to be friends.

“Are you okay? You sound exhausted,” he said.

“I’ve had better days.”

“Sorry I didn’t call you back. I was in the middle of some business. But I’m here to help. I came by your house, but you’re not here. Let me pick you up. You can tell me what the heck is going on.”

I told him where I was and filled him in on most of what had happened. I kept the blood bond to myself. I wasn’t sure it was wise to even trust Nate with that information. Not now.

When I came to the part about my brother, he interrupted. “God, that’s why Jason’s house was a mess. I went there after I stopped by your place. I… I wasn’t sure how to tell you what I’d seen.”

I swallowed thickly. “He’s been turned. I don’t know who to trust anymore, Nate. This vampire, I want to hate him, but he says he saved my brother. My brother wants me to get him out, but I’m sure he’s being influenced by Nyx which means it has to be a trap.”

Nate grunted. “Nyx can’t be trusted. He’s targeting you. Obsessed. He probably turned your brother to manipulate you.”

I nodded even though he couldn’t see it. “That’s the way I figure it.”

There was a knock at the door and when I opened it, he was standing there with a crooked grin on his face.

He hung up the phone as I let him into the room.

I threw my arms around his neck, and he hugged me back.
